Science Grad Students Receive Scholarships
San Diego chapter of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation will support 16 students this academic year.
Scholarship recipients and front row (l-r): Robin Luby, ARCS/SDSU liaison; SDSU President Stephen Weber; Lois Thompson, San Diego ARCS co-president; and Mary Lou Quick, ARCS vice president.
On Thursday, Oct. 9, SDSU President Stephen L. Weber was presented with a ceremonial $130,000 check by San Diego Chapter of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation.
The scholarship gift from San Diego ARCS will assist 16 SDSU graduate students in science. While the check shows the full year's donation, only half has actually been deposited so far.
"It's really fantastic. It's such a nice way of rewarding students that work hard," said Kimberlee Fischer, a biology doctoral candidate.
Students are able to use the scholarship funding in any way they see fit, from paying tuition to other needs, like rent.
According to four-time recipient Marc Gregorson, a doctoral candidate in chemistry, the gift has "made being a student easier financially."
