In Memoriam: Jack Logan
Celebration of Life services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 in Smith Recital Hall in the Music Building.
Jack Logan, retired professor in the School of Music and Dance, avid tennis player and loving husband and father, passed away peacefully on Aug. 12, 2011, in San Diego. He was born on Aug. 23, 1944 and raised in Stamps, Ariz.
Logan joined the SDSU faculty in 1969 at 24 as a music lecturer while working on a Ph.D. in theoretical studies in music at UCSD.
Having completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music at Southern Methodist in Dallas (1966-67), Logan enjoyed a brief career as a trumpet soloist traveling the U.S. and as an orchestral player in the San Diego Symphony and other orchestras.
Logan’s accomplishments included compositions and many sound recordings ranging from orchestral to solo trumpet focusing on contemporary avant-garde music.
Logan was instrumental in developing SDSU’s World Music program and the state-of-the-art Interactive Multimedia Lab for the Visual and Performing Arts. He impacted the lives of many students by broadening their horizons on music from across the globe.
In 1995, Logan got involved in the development of semantic mapping tools and leveraged the technology for his short-lived but successful online college program. Following retirement in 2009, Logan’s passion for the semantic web continued and he was a regular contributor to many web communities and burgeoning technology companies.
Family and friends
While Logan’s professional life was successful and fulfilling, his family and friends were his true passion. His greatest pleasure was watching his son grow into a young man and supporting Serra High School baseball and water polo. He also loved to enjoy wonderful food and wine. Logan was also a long-time member of the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.
Logan is survived by wife Monica, son Drew, cousins, and other family and friends that will miss his engaging smile. Celebration of Life services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 in Smith Recital Hall in the Music Building.
