,” an exhibition presenting the work of seven artists using natural materials to create their finished pieces.
Exploring the fringes of photography, sculpture and painting—and intersecting with notions of sustainability—“All Natural” highlights ways each individual extends beyond boundaries to produce provocative and experimental results. With many never-before-seen works, the selection will take viewers on a journey from desert to ocean to mountain, exhibiting unorthodox uses of media such as encaustic wax, rock, minerals, precious metals, textile, clay, and other materials sourced from the natural environment.
Artists in various disciplines
Artists in the exhibition include SDSU School of Art and Design alumni Stephanie Bedwell
and Jennifer Anne Bennett
, as well as Scott B. Davis
, Roman de Salvo
, John Oliver Lewis
, Jessica McCambly
, and Meghann Riepenhoff
"This exhibition came together very organically, pun intended, and all of the pieces have a poetic symbiosis in conversation with one another,” said exhibition curator and SDSU Downtown Gallery Director Chantel Paul
. “One of the most inspiring aspects was seeing the new work created for ‘All Natural’ and how the artists pushed themselves within their own practice and approach. The results are provocative and are really very beautiful."
For McCambly, the challenge of this exhibition made her question, “How can I adopt a different set of materials and still make my work?”
“As an artist whose practice is deeply involved with materiality and process, this has been a very exciting investigation,” she said. "It involved much research, along with many tests, discoveries, false starts, and even failures. Throughout my studio practice, I always come back to the belief that all of these pieces are necessary for creative growth and innovation. I am pleased with the results of this challenge and am excited to show these new pieces alongside the works of the amazing roster of artists participating in the exhibition.”
