Five hundred guests gathered at Hepner Hall yesterday to celebrate the university’s first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign with a literal kickoff by SDSU football player Abel Perez.
The Campaign for SDSU is the first university-wide fundraising campaign in SDSU history. The campaign will help attract and retain top faculty, support innovative programs and assist talented students through scholarships, as well as move the university forward with strategic investments in people and programs. Leadership starts here
Faculty and staff members were treated to root beer floats served by campus deans and vice presidents while several colleagues spoke, including:
- President Elliot Hirshman
- Edith Benkov, associate vice president, Academic Affairs
- Mary Ruth Carleton, vice president, University Relations and Development
- Jim Herrick, executive director, SDSU Alumni Association
“We believe leadership starts here at San Diego State,” Carleton said. “We believe in our faculty and staff who are making a difference locally and nationally with their cutting-edge research, teaching and student support.
$270 million raised as of Sept. 2011.
“And we believe in our students and their excitement – their momentum – that inspires us every single day.”
Carleton also noted with a smile how the university “only” had to raise $229 million for the duration of the campaign, as $271 million has been donated to date.
Encouraging faculty and staff participation
Herrick and Benkov offered several ways for campus faculty and staff to donate, including one-time donations and through payroll deduction. Additionally, Hirshman thanked those who have already made a financial commitment to the university.
“This is an exciting time,” Hirshman said. “We have much work to do. But I am confident we will succeed and SDSU will never be the same again.”
The festivities ended with Perez kicking a football over Hepner Hall.
