Aztec Student Union Tops Off Oct. 18

The student union will celebrate the construction milestone at 11 a.m.

Associated Students invites the San Diego State community to celebrate the raising of the final steel beam of Aztec Student Union at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 18.

The milestone, known as a "topping off," symbolizes the end of the steel erection process that began Aug. 31. The ceremony on South Centennial Walkway, adjacent to Student Services, will feature several speakers, including:

  • SDSU President Elliot Hirshman
  • Associated Students President Rob O' Keefe
  • Sundt representative Jamie Frye

Those unable to attend the ceremony will be able to witness the topping off from any area surrounding the project fenceline at 11:30 a.m.

Viewers of the topping off are invited to share any photos of the event on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using #AztecStudentUnion.

In fall 2013, Aztec Student Union will open its doors to the San Diego State University community as the new “campus living room.” As a hub for studying, socializing, connecting, relaxing, eating and learning, students, faculty, staff and alumni will enjoy many amenities in what is planned to be a the state-of-the-art LEED Platinum-certified building.

Aztec Student Union is funded entirely by a student-approved fee increase and receives no state funding support. Associated Students of San Diego State University, in conjunction with the SDSU Department of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction, oversee the project.
