Joe Jewell Psychedelic Quintet Performs Nov. 9

The group will perform a tribute to Paul Butterfield in Smith Recital Hall.

The Joe Jewell Psychedelic Quintet will perform “A Tribute to Paul Butterfield” at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9, in Smith Recital Hall. Tickets are available at www.sdsu.edu/musicdancetix.

About the ensemble

Ensemble members Joe Jewell, guitar; Eric Williamson, vocals and harmonica; Don King, guitar; Baba Elefante, bass, and Mike Bennett, drums; will perform a variety of blues tunes, including works by Muddy Waters, Nat Adderly, Walter Jacobs and Robert Johnson.

About Jewell

Jewell earned a doctoral degree in jazz guitar performance at the University of Southern California where he was Pi Kappa Lambda's Outstanding Doctoral Graduate. He was also the only guitarist to be accepted as a doctoral student in both the classical and studio jazz guitar departments at USC. He currently serves as professor of guitar and commercial music studies at Fullerton College.

Jewell has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He played guitar and banjo on the Los Angeles Opera's production of Kurt Weill's The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, the recording of which won Grammy Awards for best classical recording and best opera recording in 2008.

With the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Ensemble, he has performed on mandolin, banjo and guitar on the American premieres of new compositions by John Adams and Unsuk Chin. He has also made appearances at the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, the Ojai Festival and La Jolla Summerfest.
